The World Health Organization is closely monitoring a new sub-strain that has emerged in India
The World Health Organization has reported an increase in globally reported COVID-19 cases by nearly 30 percent in the past two weeks, and four of the six sub-regions of the UN agency have seen an increase in cases in the past week.
The World Health Organization indicated that in Europe and America, the rise in the number of cases is driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 variants, and in countries such as India, the organization is tracking a new substrain called BA.2.75.
At the regular press conference from Geneva, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, There are several factors that compound the challenges. The first is that the level of testing is very low in many countries.
He said, “This obscures the true picture of an evolving virus, and the true burden of Covid-19 disease globally.”
He also noted that new treatments, especially new and promising oral antivirals, are not reaching low- and middle-income countries, depriving the population who need them of treatment.
