Strong appeal from two organizations

A strong appeal was made by two international organizations
European governments secure safe disembarkation for refugees and migrants stranded on ships in the central Mediterranean
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration announced that nearly 600 people are still stranded on board NGO ships after being rescued in the Maltese and Libyan search and rescue areas in the central Mediterranean.
The two UN organizations again appealed to European governments to urgently provide a safe place for those stranded on board the ships and to allow their immediate disembarkation.
While the two UN agencies welcomed Italy’s efforts to disembark the approximately 400 people on board the “Humanity 1” and “Geo Barents”, including children traveling alone and others in need of urgent medical care, they stressed the urgent need to find a solution for all remaining survivors. Those stranded aboard the other four NGO search and rescue vessels in international waters.
