International Day to Combat All Forms of Violence and Bullying in Schools, including Cyberbullying

School violence and cyberbullying are a phenomenon that continues to intensify and exacerbate, with consequences for a huge number of children and adolescents.
UNESCO’s member states have agreed to declare every first Thursday in November the International Day to Combat All Forms of Violence and Bullying in Schools, including cyberbullying. And while taking this step, it recognizes that violence in the school environment in all its forms represents a flagrant violation of the right of children and adolescents to education, health and well-being. Hence, it calls on all UNESCO Member States, United Nations partners, relevant international and regional organizations, civil society, non-governmental organizations, individuals and other relevant parties to help promote and celebrate this International Day with ease and without obstacles.
Violence has very negative effects on students’ academic achievement, not to mention their mental health and overall quality of life. Students who are bullied are three times more likely to feel ostracized in school than other students. Victims of bullying are twice as likely to miss school as other students. Victims of bullying score worse in school than their peers, and are more likely to drop out of formal education after completing secondary education.
